Team Naming Policy

We love all the great names teams come up with in our league and encourage you to bring your passion and creativity into creating your team's name. Unlike many leagues where team names don't matter as they disappear with the end of each season, at Gotham Soccer League your name will live on! We value the history and tradition that is built each season and want to remember your triumphs and struggles. In the pursuit of this, we've constructed our website to remember all the teams that have ever played in it, and recognize this can make a new team's life difficult to find a name that hasn't already been used. This is how we approach naming:

  • Team names cannot be offensive, in implied meaning or language.
  • Teams who are active in the league are entitled to their names, new teams with similar names will have to append their name in some way, if not selected by the team, the standard in the league will be to append the year of founding to the name, similar to Schalke 04.
  • Clubs are respected, and teams across different divisions can have the same name. If through promotion/relegation a team moves into the same division as another of their club, we will respect the internal club decision as to which team retains the un-appended name. If conflicted within the club, the team entering the new division shall receive the appendage while still retaining all history of the team with the new name. This will change the name of the team in their history, but their history will continue with no interruptions.
  • If a team name is to be brought back from a retired name, this can play out in many ways. If it is clear the newly entering team is a continuation of the team previously in the league, the team will be re-instated and their history will continue. If it is not clear that the team is a continuation, the original team will retain the name un-appended, with the new team receiving an appendage of the year of founding on the website, unless otherwise directed by the team captain. In the case a new team claims to be a continuation, but is contested by the original team's administration as not a continuation, then we will append the new team's name with the founding year, unless the name is changed by the new team, which in any case the history will start anew.
  • At times, teams choose to change their names, typically after the torch has been passed from one Captain/Manager to the next. We will respect these changes and teams doing so will not be relegated due to a name change. However, when the name is changed, the old name will be closed out and a new history will begin on the website. We will not change the name of the team in the history for this instance. If a team wishes to continue adding to its history, it will need to retain the original name.
